Many people have heard me say that there are certain things that I admire about my boys, things that I wish I were more like them in these certain areas. I was thinking about that and started thinking about their professions and how each profession mirrors some of the qualities I admire so much. One son is a Pilot, the other a Rig Welder and on the surface they look to be two totally different areas of expertise but just look at the similarities I noticed:
From my son, the Pilot – This son just kind of announced to me one day that he wanted to sell his house (one that he had only lived in a few months), move back home for a couple of months to save his money, and then go to Flight school, which he did. So already I am in awe at his willingness to put everything on the line and take the risk. He did all of this on his own…he had no income for a year (maybe a little longer) as he put himself thru Flight school, but he never missed a meal and always had a roof over his head. He didn’t worry about what I would say/think, or anyone else for that matter; he just had a dream and went ALL IN.
Fast forward to his training and now his actual job. The majority of his “driving” if you will is done from gauges. Think about it, if it is nighttime there isn’t streetlights in the sky to light up the path. If it is stormy or lots of clouds it hinders visibility, so he must rely on the instrument panel to give him direction. When he starts down the runway, he must be committed and once again “all in” until he safely lands the plane at his destination.
Do you see how this relates to our life, and even our finances? You must want it-we can each have different reasons, but the bottom line is we must want it, then we have to commit to the process and go ALL IN. Don’t let fear hold you back, don’t let what others expect or what they may think of you hold you back. Decide what is best for you (and your family if applicable), commit and go all in. When Covid hit and the airline industry came to a halt, he never wavered, he never second guessed his decision; instead, he held fast to his dream, waited it out and is living his best life today!
From my son, the Welder – Same beginning scenario as this son too announced that he wanted to be a Rig Welder and that he was leaving in a couple of days headed to another state to try and get a job in this field. So once again, it amazes me how both boys don’t let fear get in the way. They don’t let the expectations of others dictate what they do or don’t do. But from this profession I have learned that you must take action. This son had no contacts in this field, no plan, no safety net, not even a mobile welder at that point – he had a dream and a truck to get him there that’s it! He committed and took action-he left out and made it work.
Back to the actual profession though…I’ve have tried my hand at welding before and when you put on the hood you can see NOTHING! I mean literally pitch black nothing! But then you strike the tip (not sure if that is the correct terminology but just go with me here) and you can see perfectly what you are doing. You can’t see ahead of where you are welding, you can’t see the part you’ve already welded but you have clear vision as to the area you are working on at that time. My lesson here is that you must take action. I can adjust that hood a dozen times, I can take it off and put it back on, I can change the shield but until I actually do the action of striking that tip I am in darkness. Again, this can apply to life as well as your finances-once you’ve committed to be all in now comes the action. Sitting and wishing things were different, waiting to get the big break or win the lottery will get you nowhere. ACTION is what nets the results you are looking for.
Make the decision, create the budget, set the goals, decide on the action steps, and GET STARTED-trust your training, trust the “instrument panel” before you. You don’t necessarily have to see the entire picture, focus on the now and just see what happens. Is your dream big enough, do you want it bad enough? LET’S DO THIS!
Don’t forget, I’m here to help you so if you need help getting started, understanding the process, deciding on the action steps or just accountability schedule a Coaching call and let’s get you moving!
