What does mindset have to do with managing money?

As I am Coaching people in their finances, whether it is creating a plan to pay-off debt, looking at their overall budget or working with them to be better managers of their money often times we are led back to their mindset.

“I can’t do this” , “I’m not good with money”, “I don’t have anything I can cut from my budget” just to give you a few examples. Your brain is wired to show you proof of your thoughts so you know what? If you are continually saying or thinking “I can do this” then you are right, you can’t! Not with that mindset anyway. Don’t fall for your own excuses-this may not be popular but if you are paying me to Coach you then I’m going to give it to you straight. No fluff no frills-we are going to get to the root cause and get you the results you are looking for.

If it is just a basic mindset thing, maybe write out a few affirmations and read them aloud each morning. If you need to, set a reminder on your phone for several times throughout the day to remind you of those affirmations. If it is a little more in depth, if you find yourself over spending of buffering something else by shopping then by all means I recommend you start Journaling.

Journaling is going to require you to dig deep. Ask yourself questions (even the hard ones) and don’t quit until you drill down to some answers. Most of the time it comes back to fear of something but it can be several things-lack of self confidence, no support system, years of negative thinking, etc. that cause you to side step the issue or task at hand and revert to shopping/spending. Are you finding your happiness/pleasure in shopping? Is that where you are pulling your worth/value from?

Let me encourage you by saying there is SO much more out there, so much more that you could pull your happiness from. Hiding, or maybe even buried, inside you is a wonderful person, created by God for a purpose. Don’t waste your time digging a hole of debt, hiding behind poor spending habits when there are all kinds of opportunities FOR YOU specifically.
